Today, a trip to Lake Sabbioni in Val Bedretto, with a climb to Poncionetto and Motto di Vinei.
First, I reach the car park at an altitude of 2,045 metres, where I leave my car, and then I start walking along the dirt road that heads south. After about 1,600 metres, I leave the road briefly to take a closer look at Lago del Rosso di Dentro, at an altitude of 2,056 metres (unofficial name).
Back on the road, I continue to follow it, slightly downhill, to Cascina di Viei. At that point, however, the road descends more steeply until it reaches Cascina dei Sterli. I therefore decide to leave it to avoid losing 70 metres of elevation gain unnecessarily and choose to climb up the easy pastures that lead to Alpe di Cavanna. Once I reach an altitude of 2165 metres, I continue westwards, trying to follow the easiest route possible. On this stretch, there are a few small valleys to cross, with stones, rhododendrons and tall grass.
Once I have passed this area, the terrain becomes clearer and I soon reach Lago Bacio, a small, elliptical lake. I then climb northwards through the pastures to Lago di Sabbioni, which is larger than the previous lake and located in a truly beautiful area. Behind the lake is a grassy plateau crossed by a clear river with a fine sandy bottom. The whole area is surrounded by a crown of peaks that culminate to the west with the spectacular rock face of Pizzo Pesciora.
After observing the region from different angles, I set off again in the direction of Poncionetto. Up to an altitude of 2400 metres, there are no problems, but then there are some rocks to climb over before I reach the summit.
After a short break, I head north-north-east until I reach a 150-metre-long scree slope south of the Cavanna Pass. After crossing it, I quickly reach the official path that descends from the pass and follow it to the right. Now the path is easier and after a little more than 1 km I reach Motto di Vinei, which I climb briefly. I then follow the path that descends to an altitude of 2062 metres, after which I continue along the road that takes me back to the car park where I started.
Water (Automatic translation in english)
There are a few streams between Rosso di Fuori and Cascina di Viei. However, you need to be careful because hundreds of sheep graze in the area and could contaminate the water. Further on, there is the river north of Lake Sabbioni, which should be safer to drink from because I did not find any animal droppings in that area.
